Past Perfect Continuous

1. How it is formed

Formula:

had + been + V-ing

For example: had been working

Subject + had + been + verb ending in -ing.

2. When to use

To show that an action had been continuing until a certain moment in the past.
To emphasize the duration or reason for a past event.
Often used with markers: for, since, before, or phrases like by the time.
Suitable when it’s important to explain why something happened (cause-effect relationship).

3. Examples

Example 1 (duration until an event):

She had been working for three hours before he finally arrived.

Example 2 (with by the time):

By the time we reached the station, the train had been waiting for twenty minutes.

Example 3 (reason):

He was exhausted because he had been running all morning.

4. Differences from other tenses

Past Perfect Continuous vs Past Continuous

Past Continuous (was/were V-ing) describes an action happening at a specific moment in the past. Past Perfect Continuous shows that the action had already been ongoing until that moment.

Example: At 6pm I was cooking. At 6pm I had been cooking for two hours.

Past Perfect Continuous vs Past Perfect

Past Perfect (had + V3) emphasizes completion until a past moment; Past Perfect Continuous emphasizes duration and can explain the reason for subsequent actions.

Example: She had finished the test. She had been taking the test for two hours.

When to choose:

Use Past Perfect to emphasize completion of an action.
Use Past Perfect Continuous to emphasize how long the action lasted or to explain a reason in the past.
