A1 (Beginner / Elementary)
Indefinite Article A
The article A is used before singular nouns when referring to an unspecified object or when mentioning something for the first time.
Main rules:
- Used before words beginning with a consonant sound: a cat, a book, a university (ˌjuːnɪˈvɜːrsɪti)
- Used with professions: She is a doctor. He is a teacher.
- Used to describe any object from a group or class: A dog is loyal. A car can be expensive.
Exceptions and special cases:
- Words beginning with a vowel sound require
AN: an apple, an hour
- Some words starting with ‘h’ in British pronunciation may use
an: an honest man
- Abbreviations and acronyms: a NASA engineer (when pronounced with an initial consonant sound)
Examples:
- I saw a dog in the park.
- He bought a book to read.
- She is a historian.
- He wants to become a lawyer.
Definite Article THE
The article THE is used when referring to a specific object that has already been mentioned or when it is clear what is being talked about.
Main rules:
- Before singular and plural nouns: the book, the books
- Before uncountable nouns when referring to something specific: the water in the glass
- Before unique objects: the sun, the moon, the president of the USA
- Before superlatives and ordinal numbers: the best movie, the first chapter
Special cases and exceptions:
- Most country names are used without an article (exceptions: the Netherlands, the United States).
- Languages and school subjects usually take no article: She speaks French. I study mathematics.
- Geographical objects: the Himalayas, the Amazon River, the Pacific Ocean
- Institutions: go to school / go to the school — without the article when referring to the general institution; with the article for a specific school.
Examples:
- She returned the book I lent her.
- We watched the movie you recommended.
- The sun rises in the east.
- He is the first person to arrive.
- They traveled across the Pacific Ocean.
Zero Article (no article)
The zero article is used when a noun appears without an article. This usually refers to general concepts, languages, school subjects, and some geographical objects.
Main cases of using the zero article:
- Before uncountable nouns in a general sense: Water is essential for life.
- Before plural nouns when speaking about all objects in general: Cars are expensive.
- Before languages and school subjects: She speaks English. I study mathematics.
- Before names of cities, countries, continents (without “the”): He lives in Paris. She traveled to Japan.
- Before abstract concepts and general statements: Life is beautiful. Love is important.
- Some institutions used as concepts: go to school, go to university, go to church
Special cases:
- Mountains, rivers, oceans and groups of countries usually require the article
the, but individual mountains and cities take no article: Mount Everest, Nile, Europe
- Some institution names may take the article or not depending on context: go to the school (a specific school)
- No article with professions used as predicates: He became president. She is teacher (rare in spoken English)

- Life is unpredictable.
- I like tea and coffee.
- She studies physics at university.
- He lives in London.
- Children need love and attention.
